How VDS Works

Visually Directed Safety is based on a number of important principles:

  • Experiential learning: provides a powerful way of influencing behaviour because people learn by ‘seeing and doing’ things for themselves.
  • Visual and interactive approaches such as those used in VDS, provide stimulating ways of making safety knowledge accessible and useful to people.
  • Fallibility in human visual information processing is a key factor in accidents and most people overestimate their perceptual and cognitive abilities.
  • Changing behaviours is key to any safety programme and VDS provides a means of addressing safety away from the classroom and at the personal level.
